Provincial WheatKing Hockey Game 1 vs La Ronge

The Rosthern Midget Wheat Kings are competing in the SHA Midget "A" provincial competition this season.  Their first round opponent is the La Ronge Braves.  The Wheat Kings traveled to La Ronge for the first game of the two game total point series on Sunday, February 5 and earned a hard fought 5-4 victory.  The second game of the series will be played in Rosthern on Sunday, February 26.

The Wheat Kings faced a talented and competitive squad in La Ronge.  After giving up the first goal of the game the Wheat Kings fought back to take the lead 2-1 at the end of the first period.  They increased their lead to 4-2 at the end of the second but were then knocked back on their heels by a determined Braves team who tied the game midway through the third period.  The Wheat Kings were able to turn momentum on their side before the game ended and regained the lead in the game and series with their fifth goal scored in the last several minutes of play.

Brendan stands his ground and moves his man out of the slot, clearing the area in front of the net and giving Josh a clear view of the puck from his crease.

"You can never let both the puck or the man beat you" is a basic rule of defensive play.  Jake does all he can to keep his player from getting past him along the boards.

Controlling the puck in the offensive end of the ice is important.  Jared effectively uses his body to shield the La Ronge defender from the puck a he looks to either pass to a teammate or cycle the puck back behind the Braves goal.

In a two game total point series every goal matters.  Josh shows textbook form as he drops to his knees to stop the La Ronge shot from point blank range.

Michael finds plenty of net over the left shoulder of the La Ronge goalie and scores for the Wheat Kings.

Paul is relied on to play important minutes for the Wheat Kings as their shut down defenceman.  The Braves forward may have pushed the puck ahead through his feet but he is not getting past Paul.

Ryan gets a great chance to tee up the puck all alone in the slot with the La Ronge goalie down and out.

Tyler does a great job of doing the hard work along the boards controlling the puck with his feet and keeping his opponent behind him.
