Provincial WheatKing Hockey Game 1 vs La Ronge

The Rosthern Midget Wheat Kings are competing in the SHA Midget "A" provincial competition this season.  Their first round opponent is the La Ronge Braves.  The Wheat Kings traveled to La Ronge for the first game of the two game total point series on Sunday, February 5 and earned a hard fought 5-4 victory.  The second game of the series will be played in Rosthern on Sunday, February 26.

The Wheat Kings faced a talented and competitive squad in La Ronge.  After giving up the first goal of the game the Wheat Kings fought back to take the lead 2-1 at the end of the first period.  They increased their lead to 4-2 at the end of the second but were then knocked back on their heels by a determined Braves team who tied the game midway through the third period.  The Wheat Kings were able to turn momentum on their side before the game ended and regained the lead in the game and series with their fifth goal scored in the last several minutes of play.

Brendan stands his ground and moves his man out of the slot, clearing the area in front of the net and giving Josh a clear view of the puck from his crease.

"You can never let both the puck or the man beat you" is a basic rule of defensive play.  Jake does all he can to keep his player from getting past him along the boards.

Controlling the puck in the offensive end of the ice is important.  Jared effectively uses his body to shield the La Ronge defender from the puck a he looks to either pass to a teammate or cycle the puck back behind the Braves goal.

In a two game total point series every goal matters.  Josh shows textbook form as he drops to his knees to stop the La Ronge shot from point blank range.

Michael finds plenty of net over the left shoulder of the La Ronge goalie and scores for the Wheat Kings.

Paul is relied on to play important minutes for the Wheat Kings as their shut down defenceman.  The Braves forward may have pushed the puck ahead through his feet but he is not getting past Paul.

Ryan gets a great chance to tee up the puck all alone in the slot with the La Ronge goalie down and out.

Tyler does a great job of doing the hard work along the boards controlling the puck with his feet and keeping his opponent behind him.

RJC Basketball vs. Birch Hills

The RJC Boys Basketball team hosted Birch Hills recently in what ended up being a barn-burner of a game.  The lead see-sawed back and forth throughout the match. The RJC boys were up 1 point with less than 10 seconds to go and got a great defensive stop, but were whistled for a foul as they fought for the rebound.  The Birch Hills guard calmly knocked down both his free throws to retake a 1 point lead.  With two seconds to go, the RJC boys got a good look at a three, but it didn't fall.  However, it was a good learning experience for the boys as they continue to learn how to execute late in close games.

Nick posts up his man.

Tandy surveys the floor.

Nick drives into the zone d.

Jordan alters another shot.

Liam spots up for the elbow jumper.

Morgan uses a screen.

Jordan gets deep post position.

Luke brings the ball up against pressure.

Rosthern WheatKings Hockey Update

The Rosthern Midget Wheat Kings have wrapped up a busy month of hockey highlighted by their "B" side victory in the Melfort Midget "A" tournament and an undefeated (15 - 0 - 1) record in regular season play.

The team will begin its SHA Provincial "A" playoffs Feb. 6 in La Ronge.  The second of the two game total point series will be held in Rosthern Feb. 26.  SVMHL playoff games will begin soon,  schedules will be forthcoming soon.

Nathan looks to clear the puck out of harms way in front of his own net while the Melfort forward tries to shovel it in.

Jake beats the Regina forward to the puck and circles with it while looking for a team mate to pass to.

Jared winds up from point blank range as the Melfort goalie goes down in anticipation of his shot.

Josh dives on the rebound in front of his net, not giving the Melfort players a second shot on goal.

Michael beats the Melfort defenceman down low and drives to the net with the puck.

Ryan gains possession of the puck in his own end and heads up ice with his line mates.

Brendan calmly takes control of the puck on his blue line.

Paul takes advantage of the flow of the game to jump up on the rush from his defense position.

Jamieson uses his speed and quick feet to outskate the pursuing defenders as he carries the puck across the blue line.

Josh, Paul and Nathan show good teamwork and positional play as they deny Melfort any chance to pass the puck in front of the Wheat King goal.
Tyler uses a combination of speed and good positioning to forecheck and gain possession of the puck.

Travis gives the Regina forward nothing to shoot at as he completely shuts down the short side of the net.
